Frequently asked questions

How is toll tax calculated in India?

Toll on national highways is set under the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008. Each toll plaza has its own rate card based on the length and cost of the highway section it covers, and rates differ by vehicle class (car, LCV, bus/truck, multi-axle and oversized vehicles). NHAI revises these rates periodically, generally effective from 1 April each year.

How does this toll calculator work?

Enter your starting point, destination and optional via-stops. The calculator computes your driving route, finds every NHAI toll plaza that lies on that route, and adds up the official rate for your vehicle type and journey type. For simple routes it also compares up to 3 alternative routes so you can pick the fastest or the cheapest option.

Which vehicle types are supported?

All seven NHAI toll classes: Car/Jeep/Van, Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV), Bus/Mini-Bus/Truck, Multi-Axle (3 axle), 4 to 6 Axle, 7 or more Axle, and Heavy Construction Machinery / Earth Moving Equipment (HCM/EME).

What is the difference between single journey and return journey toll?

A single journey toll covers one crossing of a plaza. A return journey pass covers both directions at the same plaza, generally valid within 24 hours, and is priced at about 1.5 times the single rate. This calculator uses each plaza's official return rate when you select Round Trip.

Is FASTag mandatory for paying toll?

Yes. FASTag has been mandatory for four-wheelers and larger vehicles on national highways since February 2021. A vehicle without a valid FASTag using a FASTag lane is charged double the applicable toll fee.

What is the FASTag Annual Pass?

The FASTag Annual Pass, introduced in August 2025, lets private cars, jeeps and vans pay a fixed fee of ₹3,000 for up to 200 toll plaza crossings (or one year, whichever comes first) at NHAI-operated toll plazas on national highways.

How up to date are the toll rates on this site?

Rates are sourced from the official NHAI Toll Information System (TIS) and synced regularly. Every plaza record carries its official "rate effective from" date, and plaza detail pages list emergency helplines, nearest hospital and route information from the same official source.

Can I calculate toll for state routes like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra or Rajasthan?

Yes — the calculator works for any route in India. You can also browse state-wise toll plaza lists with full rate cards for every state from the Toll Plaza section.

What should I do if a toll price shown here is wrong?

Use the "Report toll" option on the calculator. You can flag a wrong price on any plaza in your route results, report a route problem, or report the plaza nearest to your current location. Our team verifies each report against official NHAI data and corrects the record.

Who is exempt from paying toll in India?

Categories exempted under the National Highways Fee Rules include emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire services, defence and police vehicles on duty, funeral vans, and vehicles of certain dignitaries. Two-wheelers are not charged at NHAI plazas on national highways.

Does the calculator estimate fuel cost too?

Yes. Along with toll charges it estimates fuel cost using typical mileage for your vehicle class, so you get an approximate total trip cost. Actual fuel spend varies with your vehicle, load and driving conditions.
